Softly at Sunrise by Maya Banks
Series: KGI, 6.5
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
A novella within the KGI romantic suspense series revolving around the Kelly family and their friends and employees. This catches us up on what’s happening between Ethan and Rachel from Darkest Hour, 1, while P.J. is out of touch with the teams during Shades of Gray, 6.
In the version I read, this novella is located at the back of Shades of Gray, the sixth in the KGI series.
My Take
Rachel is taking a number of positive steps forward: back to teaching and moving and leaving the bad memories behind.
It’s a lovely tale of support and togetherness; a snapshot of what Rachel is doing to cope with and put her experiences behind her.
The Characters
Rachel Kelly is still learning to deal with her horrific past, and Ethan Kelly, her husband, is so completely different now. So supportive.
Sam, Sophie, and their daughter Charlotte. Sarah and Shea are holding up the ladies’ end with lots of help from Rusty, the Kellys’ adopted sister. The team that comes to Rachel’s rescue includes Ethan, Donovan, Sam, Garrett, Nathan, Joe, Swanny, Skylar Watkins, and Edge (I’m assuming she means Zane Edgerton).
Marlene and Frank Kelly are the boys’ and Rusty’s parents. Sean is another sort-of adopted son and a sheriff’s deputy collaborating on a case in this story.
Jennifer is a prize student with family problems. Kent Winstead is her angry father.
The Title
I’m guessing that the title is a metaphor for Rachel’s life today, picking up the pieces and finding the love she and Ethan had lost, “Softly at Sunrise”.
